New Code of Practice

In January 2001, the Health and Safety Commission published an Approved Code of Practice (Legionaire's Disease: The control of Legionella bacteria in water systems) referred to as L8

The L8 applies to any site involving a work activity, trade or business where water is used or stored, or where water droplets can be transmitted and inhaled, thereby causing a risk of exposure to Legionella bacteria.

The main changes to the Approved Code of Practice and guidance include:

• New guidance on the requirement for getting competent advice
• New guidance on the duties upon suppliers of goods and services
• References to a voluntary Code of Conduct for the water treatment industry
• A recommendation that routine sampling of cooling towers for Legionella is carried out on a quarterly basis, together with guidance on what action to take when Legionella is detected in such systems.
